Bicycling

Bicycling to the Schuylkill Center is a challenging and rewarding endeavor! The Schuylkill Center is located just down the road from the highest elevation point in the City of Philadelphia. With some planning and basic safety measures, you can bicycle to the Schuylkill Center, save gas, and get a workout at the same time. Please wear a helmet, and check that your bike is ready for riding up and down hills- gears, chain, and brakes.

The Schuylkill Center staff recommend the following, but take no responsibility for the results of following these directions:

Biking from Center City, Fairmount, West Philadelphia, etc:
Take the Kelly Drive bike path west along the river. At Falls Bridge, continue along the path, and curve around the highway ramp and turn left at Ridge Ave at the Wissahickon Transfer Station. The recommended route to the Schuylkill Center from here is to proceed up the hill on Ridge Ave. This is a steep and long hill, but you’ve done the hardest work of the whole trip when you get to the top! Continue along Ridge, using the bus lane as your “bike lane” when available. If you need to bike in the car lane, make sure to take up plenty of space in the lane, and cars behind you will have to wait to pass until there is more space in the road. Take a left onto Port Royal Ave when you see the U-Haul lot. Then a right onto Hagy’s Mill Road, and a careful left onto the gravel driveway onto the property.

On the way home, you can try the Main St driving route down the hill. Take a right out of the driveway, a right onto Port Royal, left onto Eva, right onto Shawmont. The hill down Shawmont is long and steep, so proceed with caution! Shawmont curves to become Umbria, which has a bike lane, and another steep downhill. At the end of Umbria, turn right onto Leverington for a short distance, then left onto Main Street. You now have the option to ride the (currently unpaved) tow-path along the river, or continue to bike along Main Street, back to the Wissahickon Transfer station, and the beginning of the Kelly drive bike path.

Biking from Germantown, Mt Airy, and Chestnut Hill
We recommend biking to Ridge Ave from your location and then following the directions above. While Henry Ave does have a bike lane, the traffic along Henry Ave is much faster than Ridge Ave.
