Orienteering: An Outdoor Navigation Sport for All Ages
October 4, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Learn to use a compass and a topographic map while exploring the woods. The Delaware Valley Orienteering Association (DVOA) will be offering orienteering courses for beginners and experienced orienteers alike.
The international sport of orienteering utilizes a compass and a detailed topographic map to find a series of numbered flags set out in wild places.
Special beginner’s clinic at 11 am – Free
For the complete beginner, learn the basics with a DVOA leader during a clinic before heading outside to complete their course. Participants in the beginner’s course will have the map fee waived
To do the advanced beginner, intermediate, or advanced courses without stopping by the beginner’s clinic, start times are 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Groups (pairs, families) can go out on one map, and the map is yours to keep. Compasses will be available for rental, as well as electronic punches. This event is rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.
Pre-registration is requested for large groups to prepare maps, but drop-ins are welcome. For more information about the sport of orienteering, please check out the DVOA website at www.dvoa.org.
