Day-off Camp: Living Underground

When schools are closed, we’re open! Bring your kids to the Schuylkill Center for a day of fun and exploration. Discover a whole world of creatures who are cloaked by their environment. We will investigate under rocks, logs and brush piles while learning about why these unique environments are essential to societies beyond their own. We will take and share photographs of our discoveries while reflecting on our experiences together. Please bring a packed lunch and a water bottle. Wear weather-appropriate clothing. Extended day until 6:00 pm is available for an additional $15/day.

For ages 5–12 | 8:00 am–3:00 pm | Members: $52 | Non-members: $62. Programs with a field trip may include an additional fee. Registration is required.

What to do when the kids are off, but you’re not!

For ages 5-12 

What does it take to survive in the cold of winter? Where can we find food? Where can we find shelter?  How can we keep warm? From fires to forts to foraging, study the habits of native wildlife to learn their secrets to surviving harsh winter weather.

Please bring a packed lunch, water bottle and weather appropriate clothing.

Learn about the importance of fire on a cold winter day.  Fire is useful for light, warmth, cooking, and water purification.  Learn how to make fire in a damp winter.

What to do when the kids are off, but you’re not!

For ages 5-12 

Where do animals go in the winter?  Where do they find food, water, and shelter?  We’ll explore the grounds and look for signs of life in the harsh winter climate.  Then, we will follow in the footsteps of our animal friends and build our own winter shelters.

Tuesday-Friday, December 26-29, 2017

Spend winter break in the outdoors, exploring our forest, climbing trees and rocks, tracking winter animals, making primitive shelters, even experimenting with snow and ice. Sign up for one adventurous day or the whole week.

2017_Fall colors

What to do when the kids are off, but you’re not!

For ages 5-12 

The beautiful fall colors have returned.  Let’s take to the trails and collect the leaves and seeds of the season.  We will imprint, color, and press them into our very own nature journals.  How many varieties of colors and shapes will you be able to find?
