Speaker: Neal M. Williams, Assistant Professor of Biology, Bryn Mawr College

Insect pollination, provided primarily by bees, is critical to the persistence of native plant populations and crop production worldwide.

Unknown to many people, much of the pollination for wild plants and cultivated crops relies on a diverse set of wild bees. Recent reports from North America and abroad suggest that native bees and the pollination they provide are in decline due in part to human activity.

Williams will discuss the importance of native bee biodiversity for pollination, how pollinator diversity in the Philadelphia region is affected by changing human activities and ongoing research at the Schuylkill Center.
