In The Spotlight: Anne Bower, Building Leaders in Sustainability
“My students and I have partnered with SCEE for eight years on numerous applied research projects, management plans and landscape designs that are both grant-funded and sweat equity. The diverse scope of the projects includes invasive earthworm control, Kentucky Warbler Habitat Restoration, American Chestnut re-introduction, restoration of Smith’s Run for bird habitat, deer management and monitoring in relation to forest regeneration, and red-bellied turtle home range radio telemetry and education on habitat threats. My students and I have worked with every Department at the Center in some capacity: volunteers, researchers, educators and wildlife caregivers. SCEE is an amazing resource of hard-working professionals in restoration, wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education willing to mentor college students and partner with a wide-range of agencies to implement forward-thinking sustainable practices. The wide variety of habitats in different stages of succession on the property along with two first order streams is an outstanding outdoor learning experience on how such a resource can be managed and a valuable asset for the ever diminishing flora and fauna of southeastern Pennsylvania. My family and friends have thoroughly enjoyed and learned from many programs and events at the Center. SCEE has a long history of people who care wanting to leave a legacy for others; in lieu of wedding gifts, we planted a wedding grove in Native Acre for all to enjoy in 2006.” |
