The Richard L. James Lecture: AWE Arts Event—Braiding Phragmites with Sarah Kavage & Yaroub Al-Obaidi

February 18, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This summer environmental artist Sarah Kavage and designer Yaroub Al-Obaidi will construct an Iraqi guesthouse Al-Mudhif at the Schuylkill Center—entirely out of Phragmites reeds. A perennial wetland grass, Phragmites Australis is an invasive species that threatens ecosystems worldwide and is one of the most abundant plants in the greater Delaware River Watershed. At this event, the artists will speak about traditional reed practices, methods of eco-friendly harvesting and eradication, and about the creation of their thatched sculpture Al-Mudhif. Join our 10th annual Richard L. James Lecture to explore displaced plants between ecology, migration and healing, and learn more about this watershed-wide art initiative LENAPEHOKING~WATERSHED.
