Find out more »Spring Fungi Hike with the Philadelphia Mycology Club
Morels, chicken of the woods, and oyster mushrooms–with the temperate weather and rainy days of spring, the forest starts to come alive with different varieties of fungi. Hike along our Ravine Loop as we learn how to identify common fungi and discover what makes each so unique. Hike route is roughly two miles in length with hills and some rocky, uneven terrain. Good hiking shoes are recommended. Space is limited to 25 participants. Donations are appreciated. Registration is required.

Last year we entered the experimental endeavor of building the first Iraqi guesthouse in North America with invasive reed material. But due to hurricane damage and decay over the winter, it has become necessary to dismantle Al Mudhif. Come celebrate the spring season with a peaceful walk through the forest. Forest therapy is deeply inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, which roughly translates to "forest bathing." Developed in Japan during the 1980s, it refers to spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health and happiness. This program will be led by Anisa George, a permaculture designer, theatre artist, and certified guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides.

Last year the Schuylkill Center brought together Iraqi refugees, U.S. veterans, and the public for the construction of Al Mudhif, entirely made out of invasive wetland reeds. The Iraqi guesthouse and sanctuary served for healing and community in nature. Exactly a year later, this Memorial Day we invite you to a last farewell to the mudhif. Start your morning off with a beginner’s tai chi class in the forest led by Jing Tang of Oriental Fitness Institute in Roxborough. Tai chi combines the body, mind, and spirit through slow, focused movements and deep breathing. Programs will be held outside so please dress for the weather. Space is limited to twenty participants.
