Summer Camp at the Schuylkill Center Offers Fun and Nature-Immersion
February 23, 2015

PHILADELPHIA Though snow still lingers on the ground and temperatures are hovering below freezing, summer is only a few months away. That means its time to think about summer camp. The Schuylkill Centers Nature Ramblers and Adventure Treks take kids of all ages out into nature, with adventure, learning, and hours of playing and exploring outdoors.

Summer camp at the Schuylkill Center is a decades-long tradition and this summer, as the Center marks its 50th anniversary, Nature Ramblers and Adventure Treks promise area youth fun, excitement, and new horizons. Since 1965, the Schuylkill Center has pioneered environmental education, from the classic field trip to nature-immersion programs like Nature Preschool and summer camp.

With an emphasis on free play, Schuylkill Center summer camps give kids the unstructured time so vital to their development, but the camps also offer children something equally important: daily immersion in nature. Being in nature has profound impacts for children of all ages, but it can be hard for parents to find safe, engaging, and accessible spaces for their kids to get that nature time. Summer camps surrounded by nature offer one solution.

In Nature Ramblers, camps for ages 3 9, children play and learn in the Schuylkill Centers 365 acres of fields, forests, and streams. The camps are age-based and focused on appropriate and engaging activities for children: in preschool camp, for ages 3 5, its all about senses, creativity, and discovering the natural world; in Down on the Farm camp, for ages 7 9, campers visit local farms, make their own bread, and get hands-on at the Teens4Good farm located at the Schuylkill Center.

For teens and pre-teens, Summer Adventure Treks challenge youth to build self-confidence and develop outdoor skills. With traveling camps to the West Virginia mountains, the Chesapeake Bay, and the dark skies of western Pennsylvania, these camps offer 10 12 year-olds and 13 15 year-olds the chance to develop leadership skills, test their own limits, and jump into a summer of adventure all in a safe and supportive environment.
